Cleansing Balm vs Oil: Who Needs One, How to Use It, 4 Korean Picks
You got home late. Your sunscreen is still on, your mascara is waterproof for a reason, and the last thing you want is a ten step ritual. Cleansing balms and oils exist for exactly this moment. Here is how they work, who actually needs one (spoiler: not everyone), how to use one without irritating your skin, and four Korean picks if it turns out to be you.
01Why the night wash is the big one
Let us start with the one skincare rule nobody in dermatology argues about. The American Academy of Dermatology puts it bluntly: remove your makeup before you go to bed, no exceptions. That includes eye makeup. Their reasoning is simple. Even makeup labeled non comedogenic can cause breakouts if you sleep in it.
The same experts recommend washing twice a day, once when you wake up and once before bed, plus after anything sweaty. That makes the two washes very different jobs. The morning one is a quick refresh. The night one has to deal with a full day of sunscreen, makeup and your skin's own oil.
That is where cleansing balms and oils come in. They are made for the things plain water struggles with, like waterproof makeup and sunscreen. As a dermatologist quoted by Cleveland Clinic puts it, oil based cleansers help remove oil based impurities and excess sebum.
02Balm vs oil, in plain English
A cleansing balm is the scoopable one. You take a bit with clean fingers (or a little spatula), massage it over dry skin, add a splash of water so it emulsifies, then rinse it away. Think of it as a face massage that happens to clean.
A cleansing oil is the pourable one. Same idea in a bottle: pour a little into your palm, massage it over dry skin, then rinse. Balms feel thicker and richer in your hands, while oils are lighter and slide around more.
Both belong on dry skin, not wet. And neither is automatically better. The real difference is how it feels, and which one you will actually want to use at midnight, when you are tired and your mascara has other plans.
| At a glance | Balm | Oil |
|---|---|---|
| How you grab it | Scooped out with clean fingers or a spatula | Poured into your palm |
| How you use it | Massage on dry skin, add a splash of water, rinse | Massage on dry skin, rinse |
| Feels like | Thicker, richer, a little spa | Lighter, slippery, quick |
03Do you actually need one?
Here is the honest part, and it matters more than any product description. The dermatologist in that Cleveland Clinic piece, Dr. Jane Wu, says double cleansing is usually not necessary, and that for most people washing your face once, thoroughly, with a gentle cleanser is more than enough. She adds that dermatologists worry more about over washing than about double cleansing. Too much washing can lead to dryness, irritation and a weakened skin barrier.
So who is a balm or oil really for?
- Waterproof makeup or waterproof sunscreen wearers. This is the sweet spot. The oil step helps remove both.
- People who wear makeup most days. If your night wash is battling foundation and eye makeup, a first step with a balm or oil helps break it down.
- No makeup, no sunscreen, no problem. If that is you, a double cleanse may not be worth it. One gentle wash can do the job.
- Dry or sensitive skin. If you add a second wash, pick a gentle, unscented, water based one. Creamy formulas tend to be less drying than foaming ones.
- Oily or acne prone skin. Go carefully here, because experts do not fully agree. Cleveland Clinic notes that an oil step can help lift excess oil, but also warns that oil based cleansers can cause breakouts in acne prone skin, especially when used alone. The AAD's guide for oily skin goes further and says to avoid oil based cleansers. If this is you, check with a board certified dermatologist before making it a habit.
04The routine, step by step
This version blends the dermatologist basics with the directions from the balm brands themselves.
- Dry hands, dry faceScoop a bit of balm (Banila Co's spatula is there for this) and spread it over dry skin. Both Banila Co and April Skin want it that way.
- Massage with your fingertipsFingertips only. A washcloth or sponge can irritate your skin, so leave them in the drawer. Spend extra time where makeup and sunscreen like to hide, and do not scrub, even to get makeup off.
- Add a splash of waterKeep massaging and add a little water so the balm emulsifies. That is April Skin's own tip.
- Rinse with lukewarm waterNot hot, not cold, since hot water can dry your skin out. Banila Co says you can wipe the balm off with a cloth, but we would rinse, since fingertips are the only thing dermatologists want touching your face.
- Optional: a second washWore heavy makeup or waterproof sunscreen? Leave your skin damp, massage in a gentle water based cleanser, and rinse again. If one wash leaves your skin clean and comfortable, skip this step.
- Pat dry, then moisturize if you feel tightPat with a soft towel instead of rubbing. If your skin feels dry or itchy afterward, moisturizer goes on next.

See the oilNot sure which to start with? Here is our cheat sheet.
- Want zero fragrance? Go for Dr. Althea.
- Fighting waterproof mascara? Banila Co was made for that.
- Love a scoopable, sorbet texture? April Skin is your match.
- Prefer pourable, and a big bottle? Anua's oil comes in 200ml.
Our tiebreaker is simple: pick the texture you will actually enjoy using. A cleanser you like is a cleanser you reach for every night, and consistency beats any fancy formula.
And if your skin is acting up in ways a gentle routine does not fix, a board certified dermatologist beats any blog post, including this one.
